Having a performant team at work is not an easy job for most of the managers. There are a lot of things that you need to learn and keep track of if you want your team to achieve great performance in both the long and short run.
However, there are several things that you can start implementing today if you don’t do it already that will make you see results almost instantly.
After doing this for already one year here is my top 5 list of things that helped me keep my team motivated and performant:
1. Communicate with your team
Communication is a crucial step in the success or..failure of your business. You need to communicate with your customers and with your colleagues very clearly.
Make sure everyone understands what you expect from them and along the way ask if they need your help or they have questions.
I know you may think that they will do it anyway but that’s not the case for everyone.
Some of your colleagues may don’t want to interrupt you, others simply think they will make a bad impression if they don’t understand things briefly and so on.
Communication is a two-way street. Whenever you’re feeling uncertain about anything, ask someone. Whether you’re a manager or not, make it your ultimate goal to establish a consistent communication channel among your team members. Talk to your colleagues. Listen to what they have to say.
2 Set milestones
Setting milestones is a crucial step if you want to improve the performance of your team. How can you track performance if you haven’t set goals and milestones?
It’s okay to be brave when you set goals to improve performance. The problem is that large projects can be overwhelming. By breaking these big personal and professional projects, you stay motivated with every small victory.
Setting individual performance metrics to analyze your goal is also very helpful when it comes to maintaining morale and energy. Keep an eye on your progress, allow yourself to enjoy your success (however small it may be) and share it with your team.
3 Organize, plan and prioritize
If you don’t plan very well every project, organize the activities and prioritize them soon everything will be a mess. Been there and it’s the number one performance killing factor as everyone will start losing focus and motivation.
That’s why you need to make sure you spend enough time to organize and plan every project so your colleagues know exactly what they need to do.
4 Stay focused and avoid distractions
Never lose sight of your goals along with your journey. Every time you feel tempted to waste some time checking out your Facebook feed or catching on your favorite youtube channels, remember what’s at stake.
Sustainable continuous improvements are part of a slow evolutionary process. It feeds off consistent progress. Make sure you remember that. Focus on taking one step at a time and completing the previous task before starting a new one.
If you need to maintain your focus, you may use a time-tracking app. These are stand-alone tools or come in different packages along with other apps. It may be pricey but having a focused team will pay way better in the long run. Check Field service management software price and see if it’s for you.
5) Don’t leave things unfinished
Another thing I’m guilty of, and it’s very likely a consequence of trying to multitask. Do you remember how many projects you’ve started only to abandon them shortly after?
Besides not having the feeling of accomplishing something, your team may feel their work is not appreciated or useful which is another motivational killer. Also leaving things unfinished you will not be able to track the progress or the results of your work.
There you have it.. 5 tips that will give a boost to your team’s performance almost instantly after you implement them. However, keep in mind that keeping your team performant is an ongoing task.
