Everyone who uses a printer at work knows the frustration they can cause. We’ve all been there – standing in front of the printer as an error light flashes or paper comes out completely blank – and there’s nothing worse than not knowing what’s causing the problem.
Don’t worry though, we’re here to offer some printer troubleshooting tips which will help you to fix your printer problems now and in the future!
Paper is stuck in my printer
If the paper is regularly getting stuck inside your printer, it’s likely that a small piece has become trapped and keeps causing jams.
You can solve this issue by removing all paper from the paper tray, opening up the printer, and carefully removing any trapped scraps that you see.
Always consult your manufacturer’s handbook before doing this and, if you’re in doubt, call a professional.
My prints are streaky
If you’re printing on a high-performance laser printer like this Lexmark printer, you’ll be expecting high quality, pristine print-outs. If your printed documents regularly have streaks, smudges, or other imperfections, it could be due to your paper choice.
Make sure that the paper you’re using is suitable for both your particular printer model and the type of ink or toner inside. If it’s not, it might not be absorbing the ink or toner properly, leading to wet ink on the surface that can smear easily.
My printer is slow
When your printer speeds are sub-par, there’s a quick fix you can make to get some speed back. Setting a printer to draft mode will increase its printing speed by reducing the amount of ink that is sprayed on each page, usually by about 5-10%.
However, the draft mode can have a negative impact on quality so it’s probably best to reserve for when you’re printing informal documents, for internal use only for example.
You can also prevent slow printing by avoiding sending too many print requests at one time.
Older printers with less RAM can struggle with multiple large requests but you can increase the amount of RAM in your machine yourself or look into newer models with more built in.
I can’t print from my phone or tablet
Although a relatively recent development in the printing world, printing from mobile devices like smartphones and tablets has proved to be a hugely valuable feature. As smartphones become more and more integrated into everyday and business life, not being able to print from them has become a nuisance.
If you’re struggling to print from mobile devices, the first thing to do is check that both the device and your printer are connected to the same wireless network and have no connectivity issues.
If they are and you still can’t print, make sure that your mobile’s printing app is fully updated and the printer’s drivers/firmware are the most recent versions. After this, simply reboot both your printer and mobile device before trying again.
My printer says ‘empty cartridge’
….but I know there’s ink/toner left. An error message such as ‘empty cartridge’ appearing on your printer can often be preemptive, meaning that your printer is just letting you know that it’s time to order more ink or toner.
There’s no need to change the cartridge until it actually stops printing, or the quality of prints is significantly affected, just make sure to order a new one as soon as possible.
