Indeed forums can still have a word to say in a couple of niches especially in gaming, adult and niches where privacy is important so users will not participate with their real social media accounts. Also I belive that there are niches where a forum is a great addition of an authority website but it needs, as you say, to go around social media. Competing with social media and now especially with video like yotube or tiktok is not an option!
