SEO is necessary for any kind of business. If you want to attract more new customers and boost sales, you have to optimize your website. SEO is the best tool nowadays, it works effectively. Assuming that the business has any form of online presence–then the obvious answer is yes.

I work with social media agencies and the main way we improve both our online presence and our conversion from audience to client is through masterful optimization of our SEO. 

We make sure that the blog posts that we pump out are informational and in-depth enough to garner organic readers. Our social media platforms, albeit riddled with nofollow links, are also a huge funnel towards our site. Plus, we have killer proposals that close out deals quite nicely when paired with our socmed, SEO, and marketing efforts.

SEO should be as any other marketing channel like affiliate marketing, PPC, social media ads a way to bring traffic and customer to an website. So if you can bring customers from other marketing channels you may avoid doing SEO but the question is why will you ignore it?

In most of the niches, SEO has proven to be one of the best channels to bring customers. That's because if people search for your products in Google or any other search engine (Bing, DuckDuckGo) then you should show your business to those customers.

There are two downsides of SEO: 

1. It takes time to get results. Sometimes you have to wait between 4 and 12 months till you see good results from SEO
2. In high competition niches it may costs you quite much to bring customers through SEO and you should explore other options.

But In closing I consider that for most of the small businesses SEO is necessary so they should not ignore it.
